Creative Movement (3-4 yrs old)

Creative Movement, the very beginning of dance education, teaches young children to better understand themselves and the world around them; inspiring the inner self in conjunction with the physical body. Through imaginative lessons, children will be inspired to move in ways that build balance, rhythm, and reflexes, as well as creativity and art and music appreciation. A cultural experience for the young explored through movement. Students must be potty-trained and able to dress/undress themselves (teacher cannot leave others to help in restroom).

Ballet (Ages 5yr-up)

Abella’s School of Dance is proud to include the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE® National Training Curriculum, a breakthrough 8 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development. The ABT® National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels. All ballet levels are determined by placement by the director.

Jazz (Ages 5yr-up)

An intense focus on jazz technique that consists of parallel positioning, isolations, progressions, and staccato movement. This class develops strength, flexibility, and correct body placement knowledge while improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street, Commercial and Contemporary to help develop a well rounded dancer. Jazz classes are fun and energetic and they include such elements as kicks, leaps, turns, and splits.

           Tap (Ages 5yr-up)

Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Students are taught rhythms, timing, and coordination done to various types of music. The class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique and producing clear tap sounds.

Hip Hop (Ages 7yr-up)

Hip hop is a high-energy class that incorporates the latest styles of street and urban dancing with popping, and locking. At Abella’s, Hip Hop is heavily influenced by technical training and taught through commercial style Hip-Hop that offers a diverse, beat driven style of dance using different movements from high pace and aggressive to slow and fluid movement. The classes include much of the (age appropriate) music you hear on the radio and is influenced by movement seen on music videos and in movies. Hip Hop encourages students to step outside of the box by bringing their individual personality and style to the class.

                                                    Character (Ages 12yr-up)

The presence of character dancing in Classical Ballet is undeniable; many of our favorite story ballets such as Coppelia, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker exhibit character dance as a way to illustrate an era, a region and most importantly, a character!  It is certainly an advantage as a dancer to have experience in Character Dance.  Abella’s School of Dance honors the tradition of classical ballet study and feels that a character dance class is an essential part to a dancer’s education. Character dance class explores rhythms (thus enhancing the dancer’s musicality), engages the use of the torso and épaulement, and opens up the opportunity for creative expression, while also introducing music and classical folkloric movements from around the world.

Choreography (Ages 10yr-up)

In this contemporary and modern style class students work through different improvisation exercises and choreographed pieces and phrases. Choreography and improvisation is essential for performance and the audition process because it is when training is paired with artistry and students will learn to pick up and piece together different steps while interpreting a vision and executing the proper technique. Choreography class teaches adaptation to style, movement patterns, formation change and choreographing on the spot. Dancers benefit from learning to memorize and master choreography quickly and will also begin to learn the process of choreographing their own pieces.

Conditioning (Ages 12yr-up)

This class is designed to improve a dancer's range of motion, enhance muscle flexibility and increase their level of core muscle strength. Strength training is important for a dancers overall ability, strengthening the body’s opposing muscles is vital to avoid injury. Flexibility work is important so that the dancer’s movement seems effortless and light. Our Conditioning class is designed to build stamina and condition the body for advanced dancing.

                                                                       Contemporary (Ages 10yr-up)

A mixture of “modern” or current movement and lyrical dance, which requires an understanding of ballet and jazz technique. Movement is set to music that promotes storytelling through lyrics and emotional response. Contemporary dance uses music to evoke emotion and movement.

Modern (Ages 10yr-up)

An emphasis in modern and post-modern movement. This strays from traditional technical training and explores new movement patterns that focus on the avant-garde and unconventional. Classes begins with exercises that emphasize alignment, extension, release, weight, momentum, and force, and finishes with movement phrases that explores the dancer’s relationship with space. The goal is to develop intelligent, strong dancers that are prepared for their dance future.

Private lessons are available at an additional cost.
